Ontario’s vast landscape is home to over 340 provincial parks and nearly 300 conservation reserves.  Among these many parks, Sturgeon Bay Provincial Park is one we think you should visit!

At 14.23 hectares, the park is smaller than many of the other provincial parks geographically.  Its location near the eastern shore of Georgian Bay offers visitors a chance to experience the natural beauty of Ontario’s rugged Georgian Bay shoreline from the calm waters of one of its many sheltered bays.

With its iconic Georgian Bay scenery, crystal-clear waters, and a countless number of islands to explore by boat, Sturgeon Bay provides an escape for nature lovers, families drawn to the safe, sandy beaches within, and fishing and boating enthusiasts.

Unusually for provincial parks, there are no hiking trails, but with such great water-based activities to partake in, who needs them?

Swimming

The calm waters of Sturgeon Bay boast a natural sandy beach, with a designated swimming area that’s marked with buoys. There is no lifeguard, but the shallow, gradual water entry makes it safe and enjoyable for everyone.  Pets are not permitted on the beach, so it might be best to make other plans for them this time.

The park’s location within the Thirty Thousand Islands region, and access to Georgian Bay makes it a great place to explore it from the water.  The sheltered location of Sturgeon Bay makes the water perfect for canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts.

If you don’t have your own canoes, there are rentals available within the park, so that everyone has the opportunity to explore the park from the water. It’s just a short paddle to get out to the main part of Sturgeon Bay, and from there easily reach some of the islands, all while you’re surrounded by stunning scenery.

If you have a motorboat, you can explore more extensively!  There is a boat launch in the park so you can bring your own boat, or rent one nearby.  Boaters can navigate through Sturgeon Bay into Georgian Bay, exploring the endless number of islands along the way.

Whatever type of boat you’re using, it is important to check the weather forecast, as the weather conditions on Georgian Bay can change quickly.  If the weather does start to look threatening, head to shore so you’re not caught out on the water during a storm.

Fishing

Sturgeon Bay Provincial Park and the surrounding Georgian Bay waters are excellent destinations for fishing! You’ll find many different species of fish there, but the most commonly caught fish are Northern Pike and Bass, both Smallmouth and Largemouth.  Before heading out, make sure that you have the appropriate fishing licenses and that you are familiar with local regulations.

There is a very small 81 site car-campground at Sturgeon Bay Provincial Park, many with electrical hookups.  Amenities are limited, but include drinking water and toilets.  On the cabin side of the park, a short distance away, there are laundry facilities and showers.  Campsites are within walking distance of the beach, so campers can easily enjoy swimming, boating, and canoeing.  Although the campground is not as popular as other larger ones, we still recommend that you make your reservations in advance, particularly during peak seasons.

In addition to the regular campsites, there are 4 rustic cabins available for rental, with each able to accommodate between 4 and 8 people.  Please note that while appliances are provided, campers need to bring their own bedding, pots, pans, dishes, cooking and eating utensils, and pets are not permitted.

Nearby Attractions

While you’re staying in the area, be sure to visit some of the other, larger provincial parks of Parry Sound.  The town of Parry Sound is the largest in the area, and it really bustles in the summer.  The Bobby Orr Hall of Fame is fun for all ages, and is a must see!  Try one of the top things to do in downtown Parry Sound, and when you’re ready, enjoy a delicious meal at one of these popular Parry Sound restaurants too.

Why Sturgeon Bay Provincial Park is Worth Visiting

While many of Ontario’s other provincial parks are more well-known and frequently visited, we think Sturgeon Bay Provincial Park is a great destination for those looking to experience the region without the noise and crowding of larger parks.

Its waterfront location in a sheltered bay with a sandy beach allows for water activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing, and the surrounding forests allow for peaceful camping in a quiet, picturesque setting, albeit with limited amenities.  Book your Parry Sound waterfront cottage rental with CottageLINK Rental Management today and start planning your trip!
