Friday Arrival: Setting the Stage for Relaxation
On Friday, January 17, 2025, a few girlfriends and I set out for a much-needed mom’s weekend away at the charming Sturgeon River Cottage in Waubaushene, Ontario. Conveniently located just off Highway 12 and steps from Georgian Bay, the cottage provided an ideal retreat from our busy lives.
We arrived at different times throughout the afternoon and early evening, making unpacking and settling in seamless. Sarah was the first to arrive and parked conveniently in front of the cottage to unload. After unpacking, she moved her car to make room for Lexy, who arrived shortly after. Together, they started prepping the appetizers for dinner while Taylor and I completed the group as the last to arrive. We quickly unpacked, changed into cozy hoodies and track pants, and officially began our weekend of relaxation.
Friday Night Fun
Our first evening was all about unwinding. We played various games—some provided at the cottage and others we brought from home—while enjoying some delicious appetizers. The cozy ambiance of the log-effect stove in the living room created the perfect backdrop for reconnecting after months of hectic schedules.
Sleeping arrangements were equally accommodating. Sarah chose the pullout couch in the living room, Taylor took the lower level bunk, Lexy claimed the third bedroom, and I had the primary. Lexy’s dog, Diesel, and my German Shepherd, Mylah, found their spot in front of the stove, making it clear they enjoyed the cottage as much as we did.https://www.clrm.ca/vacation-rentals/rental/SturgeonRiv/
Saturday Morning: A Relaxed Start
Saturday began with a leisurely morning fueled by freshly ground coffee and homemade breakfast sandwiches courtesy of Sarah. After savoring our slow start, I jumped on Facebook Live to give potential guests a tour of the cottage and property—a perfect way to share this hidden gem.
Exploring the Surroundings
We ventured out for a walk along the quiet road and around the corner, soaking in the crisp winter air. On our walk, we met a friendly couple walking their puppy, giving Mylah a chance for a playful romp.
Being at the cottage with friends instead of family was a new experience for me. While I often spend winter cottage weekends building snowmen and having snowball fights with my kids, this weekend was all about relaxing—with a bit of snowball-catching fun for Mylah, of course.
Afternoon Hot Tub Bliss
Mid-afternoon mimosas set the stage for a luxurious soak in the hot tub. The 102-degree water felt amazing against the chilly air, and the privacy screen not only shielded us from the wind but also added an extra layer of coziness. It was a highlight of the weekend.
Saturday Night: Games & Comfort Food
After warming up, we returned inside for more appetizers and a fiercely competitive round of UNO. Discovering and combining our different house rules made for plenty of laughs. Dinner was a hearty chicken Alfredo paired with garlic bread—the ultimate winter comfort food. We spent the rest of the evening chatting in the living room before retiring to bed.
Sunday Farewell: Wrapping Up the Weekend
Sunday morning came too quickly, but we made the most of it with a hearty breakfast hash using leftovers from the weekend. After cleaning up and following the departure checklist, we packed up and said goodbye to the peaceful retreat that had been our home for the weekend.

Our stay at Sturgeon River Cottage was exactly what we needed—a perfect mix of relaxation, good food, and great company. Whether you’re planning a family vacation or a getaway with friends, this charming cottage has everything you need for a memorable experience. We’ll definitely be back!
