1. Killbear Provincial Park

Killbear Provincial Park is a gem for outdoor enthusiasts during the spring, summer and fall months, closing from early January to mid-March each year for winter. The iconic rugged, rocky shoreline, dotted islands and windswept trees was famously rendered by the Group of Seven artist AJ Casson in Killbear Park shown below:

Although there are water-only tours to take, either a 2 hour morning or a 3 hour afternoon cruise, for families with children we highly recommend taking the Island Adventure Cruise, and explore Huckleberry Island on a guided hike, and a chance to go for a swim at one of the most beautiful secluded beaches on the Bay.  You can also enjoy a shore lunch at Henry’s Sans Souci!  Children under 5 are free, but please note that the terrain on the island is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

3. Visit the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame

For hockey enthusiasts and sports lovers, the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame is a must-visit, but it’s also a great family outing, even if the kids don’t know or care about Bobby Orr!  The Hall of Fame celebrates the achievements of legendary hockey player Bobby Orr of course, but also other local sports figures.  Most fun of all for the kids, the hall features interactive exhibits, where they can engage in hands-on activities, making it one of the best family-friendly activities in Parry Sound.

Parry Sound is a great destination in the winter too, and a whole new range of family-friendly activities becomes possible.  The reliable layer of snow and ice typically in place from December to March (and sometimes even in November and April) means that snow- and winter-lovers can count on enjoying the great outdoors and immerse themselves in winter fun!

1. Snowshoeing, Fat Biking, and Cross-Country Skiing

Explore the serene, snowy beauty of Parry Sound’s trails by snowshoeing, fat biking, or cross-country skiing. The Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre just outside Parry Sound offers well-maintained trails suitable for all skill levels. Rentals of all equipment are available, making it easy for families to participate even without having purchased the equipment.  

2. Snowmobiling Adventures

Parry Sound Snowmobile District has an 1100 kilometre trail network extending from the Moon River in the south to the Key River in the north, Georgian Bay in the east to Highway 11 in the west.  That and the reliable snowy weather makes Parry Sound an ideal destination for snowmobiling enthusiasts.

Experience the thrill of ice fishing on the inland lakes in the area, or on the frozen waters of Georgian Bay.  On the inland lakes, Walleye, Crappie, Perch and Pike are possible, while Lake trout is the goal on Georgian Bay.  Lake Trout generally are found at depths from 50-80 feet.  Some great ice-fishing tips can be found here.

Ensure you have the necessary permits and equipment, and always prioritize safety on the ice.  Please remember that four inches of ice is safe to walk on, eight inches can support a snowmobile, and 12 inches is safe to drive your light truck on the ice. To check ice thickness ahead of time, call your local bait shop.

Celebrate winter at Parry Sound’s annual Snowfest held on Family Day weekend in February. 5. Ice Skating

If the waterfront at your rental cottage is completely iced over, you may be able to clear a rink right on the ice!

If not, you’ll still be able to skate!  There are public skating sessions at the Bobby Orr Community Centre.  For a more traditional outdoor skating experience, Kinsman Park has a covered outdoor arena that’s lit up at night so you can still enjoy ice time after dark.
