Nestled in the heart of Ontario’s breathtaking cottage country, on the shores of Oastler Lake, lies Oastler Lake Provincial Park.  The park is open from mid-May to mid-October, and closes for the winter.  While the location doesn’t lend itself to the peace and tranquility you’ll find at a more isolated park, its close proximity to Parry Sound makes this the perfect spot for a quick getaway while still experiencing nature.

Whether it’s to enjoy some beach time, boating or fishing, Oastler Lake Provincial Park is the perfect spot to visit, and has one of the best beaches in the area! Many of our private Parry Sound cottage rentals are located nearby, providing a great home away from home from which to explore this lovely park.

Location and Accessibility

Where Is Oastler Lake Provincial Park?

The park’s location along Oastler Park Drive is easily reached via Highway 400, making it a straightforward, easy-to-find location. Once you arrive at the park, well-placed signage guides you to key areas within it, ensuring that your adventure starts without a hitch.

History of Oastler Lake Provincial Park

Oastler Lake Provincial Park was established as part of Ontario’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage. The park’s creation aimed to safeguard the pristine beauty of its lake and surrounding woodlands while providing a space for the public to connect with nature.

This region holds deep cultural importance, with a history rooted in Indigenous traditions. Long before it became a provincial park, the land was cherished by local communities for its resources and spiritual connection.

Please note that, unlike most other provincial parks, Oastler Lake Provincial Park does not have hiking trails, but hiking and biking is available on the Seguin Recreational Trail, accessible from the railroad tracks across the road from the park.

While this park is an excellent choice for anyone wishing an easily accessible, convenient getaway in nature that’s close to nearby amenities, it would be less desirable for anyone preferring a “getaway from it all” type experience.  With the railway tracks on one side, and a major highway on the other side, the park will likely not provide the peace and solitude that anyone preferring a more remote, quiet location would wish for.

Boating & Fishing at Oastler Lake Provincial Park

Oastler Lake is a small, irregularly shaped inland lake, suitable for boats up to 20’ long.  There’s a boat launch for these smaller boats, offering easy access for a day of fishing or just exploring the shoreline.  The lake’s small, but interesting shape makes it ideal for exploration by canoe, kayak, or stand up paddleboard.

The lake is home to a variety of fish species, including bass, pike, and trout. According to Ontario Parks, summer is the best time to cast your line!

One of the best beaches in Parry Sound is located right here in the park.  The beach is sandy, and generous in size enough to allow for beach volleyball games, building sand castles with the kids, or just relaxing and soaking up the sun. The lake’s clear, clean waters are ideal for swimming, whether you’re paddling at the shoreline or diving in for a refreshing swim.  You can wade out a few hundred feet before it deepens, making it great for young children too.

For more adventurous types, you’ll be happy to know that cliff jumping is also available on the lake!

Camping in the Park

Oastler Lake Provincial Park is small compared to other parks, but there are still five car-camping campgrounds and 10 walk-in campsites to choose from.  Many of the campsites are located along the shoreline of the lake.  Please note that there are no RV accommodations within the park.

The Point Campground is radio-free, and has 10 walk-in campsites on the tip of the peninsula.  Campsites are approximately 100-300 metres from the parking lot.  Parking for one vehicle per campsite is available.

As noted earlier, railway tracks are nearby and used frequently, so you will experience some noise from that.  Campers can also rent canoes, if they choose to do so, on a first-come, first-served basis. There’s room for one vehicle at each campsite, and additional cars may be parked in the extra parking lot.
