Talbot – Birchview – CLRM Staff Review

Having suddenly found out my husband had the long weekend off (a rare occurrence), we decided to try to book a cottage for Labour Day.  Talbot – Birchview was a new addition to our site, it looked very appealing and was the perfect size for just the two of us, plus our Cocker Spaniel, Ruby.  Being only 2 ½ hours from home was another big plus!

Arriving

Knowing that we would be the very first guests to stay at the cottage, I joked with my husband that we were the “guinea pigs!” I was expecting to discover at least a few shortcomings to suggest that the owners remedy prior to having “real” guests arrive (after us).  We were very pleasantly surprised by just how prepared the owners were!

The cottage is a small jewel, perfect for either two couples or a small family, or as part of a larger group by renting the Talbot – Pineview cottage next door, which would allow for two families to share the property and yet have privacy as well.

Interior

I loved the décor, and the kitchen storage ideas (which I would have loved to take home with me)!  The extra-deep sink meant that fewer dishes had to be stacked on the countertop waiting to be washed; it was almost a pleasure to use while doing dishes!  I loved the pull-out spice rack, complete with quite a few spices.  I always bring my own, never being sure I’ll find what I need at a cottage, but it wasn’t really necessary in my visit to Talbot – Birchview!

Dock & Waterfront

The waterfront dock is fairly shady at Talbot – Birchview, (generally sunnier at Pineview) yet there’s plenty of sunlight if you sit farther back on the lawn.  I took the kayak out one day and actually paddled right around the large island that is in view in front of the cottage.  The island provides a greater sense of privacy and view of nature, since there are no cottages on it, and slows the boat traffic down to a crawl while they pass by on this side of the island.

Fishing

We’re not fishing people, but it seems like the waterfront must be good for that, as we saw quite a few fishing boats nearby in the early mornings.  They were so picturesque in the very still water.

Swing Bridge

The Trent Severn Waterway passes on the other side of the island, which is where you’ll find one of the many swing bridges across Ontario! If you wish to watch the swing bridge in operation, the walk from the cottage to the single-land bridge is only about 5 minutes.  There, you will find a small parkette with a picnic table.  Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to see the bridge in operation, but on busy days it opens up to 50+ times a day to accommodate the taller boats (including pontoon boats) passing through, according to the Parks worker we chatted with.  A good time to catch it would be 9:00 AM when there are often boats lined up waiting for the Parks staff member to start their day.

Overview

All in all, we had a great few days at Birchview, and would recommend it to anyone!
