There’s a good chance your dog will encounter some wildlife on your cottage vacation and a fair likelihood that one of those critters may be a skunk. When your dog is sprayed by a skunk, the smell is foul and can linger for a long, long time so here’s my favourite home made skunk odor removal recipe.
Your first instinct will be to bring your pet in to the cottage and dump him or her in the bathtub. Do not do this as skunk odor will pervade the entire property, and if the dog touches the carpet or furniture on the way in, you’ll have a tough job getting rid of the skunk smell off there as well. Let’s not create more work!
Stay outside and leash the dog to a tree or post where he can’t do any more stinky damage.
Use the plastic container in the kit and mix together the bottle of hydrogen peroxide with ¼ cup baking soda and a teaspoon of Dawn dishwashing liquid.
Apply the mixture to a dry coat if possible. Rub it in thoroughly, using a soft toothbrush around the face and eyes.
Leave the solution on for up to 20 minutes
Rinse thoroughly using buckets of water or the hosepipe.
You should not let the dog in the property until the smell has entirely gone, so some active water play would be good as a next step. If the smell persists, repeat the process.
Note that the hydrogen peroxide will strip any topical flea medications, such as Frontline or Advantage, from the fur, so you should reapply within 48 hours.
Do not save any of the solution as it may explode in a sealed container.
