Easy Pumpkin Pie Recipe To Make During Your Ontario Cottage Rental

Fall is all about pumpkins and spice, autumn leaves, s’mores around a crackling campfire and pies baking in the oven! We’re thrilled to share a secret family recipe that you can easily make during your next Ontario cottage rental or your in your own kitchen, from our favourite farmers who recently welcomed their 6th generation to their Eastern Ontario farm!

It isn’t Thanksgiving or a fall family dinner without Grandma Barb’s Pumpkin Pie for dessert. If you are planning to make this at one of the amazing kitchens in our Ontario cottage rentals, be sure to pack your favourite pie tins for baking and taking any leftovers home, even though leftovers are pretty unlikely!

What you’ll need:
1 small tin of pure pumpkin
2 eggs
1 cup brown
dash of salt
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp cinnamon
1 cup scaled milk
nutmeg
1 pre-made pie shell found in any frozen food section

As you’re gathering your ingredients, preheat oven to 400F.

With the oven heating up, take one of your bowls and mix together the eggs and brown sugar. Add pumpkin, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg and mix well. Once together, add scalded milk and pour it into your pie shell. Give the filled pie shell a good shake to even out the filling and bring any air bubbles to the top, then sprinkle nutmeg on top.

Bake in your preheated oven for 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and centre comes clean when tested with a toothpick. Check the pie after the first 30 minutes of cooking: if the crust is already browned, reduce the heat to 350F to allow the pumpkin filling to cook without the crust burning.

Let cool, and serve warm on it’s on own or top with whipped cream or ice cream!

You could always use fresh pumpkin puree like the kind we made for our Pumpkin Apple Oatmeal Cookies if you’re visiting local Ontario markets and want to make your own too!
