We’ve Stayed Here – Dobson’s Dam CLRM Review

We chose Dobson’s Dam in Chesley as a winter weekend getaway on Family Day weekend.

Why we chose the Cottage

The cottage is an easy, highway free drive from our home (in the Waterloo area), which is a bonus, especially on a holiday weekend.  It’s also easily accessible, on fairly flat roads, so any vehicle with snow tires would have no problem getting there.

It was important to us that the cottage have good privacy and be pet-friendly so we could bring our Cocker Spaniel, Ruby, along, and Dobson’s Dam checks all those boxes.

I initially hoped that a few of our adult “kids” might be able to join us at the cottage…but I’m sure that the idea of a weekend with mom and dad wasn’t too alluring over Valentines Day, whether it’s combined with Family Day weekend or not, so we were on our own for the weekend!

Arriving

Dobson’s Dam is located at the end of a small country road, behind a set of gates. It’s nice and private, which is great for a privacy nut like me.

Inside, the cottage is warm and comfortable, with lots of room for 2 families to spread out. I enjoyed spending early mornings sipping a cup of tea on the couch, just enjoying the peace & quiet and the beautiful winter scenery. It’s nice to have the cottage near the water so you can hear the North Saugeen River flow even in winter.

Snowmobiling

Since I know the property owners through CLRM, they were kind enough to offer to take us snowmobiling one day, and I rather nervously agreed, not having ridden a snowmobile for over 30 years! At the appointed time, we met at “Grandpa’s Garage” for our outfitting. We were able to use our own boots and mitts, but Al and Barb graciously provided snowmobiling outfits and helmets for us to use. Al (the owner of Dobson’s Dam) even let Jim (my husband) drive his own snowmobile, which was very generous of him.

The cottage is close to snowmobiling trails, which can be accessed from the cottage’s own property, but since it was the first weekend the trails were open,  the route to the actual trails had a couple of “bumps”. I rather quickly learned my first lesson the hard way, on that first bump. It’s best to hunker down in the seat, turtling my neck a bit, to avoid having a near concussion while traveling over said bumps! The rest of the outing was almost seamless, and we enjoyed it a lot, especially the stop at the heated snowmobiling clubhouse!

Thanks again, Al and Barb, and the rest of the family who were kind enough to lead us on the trails and make sure we made our way back to the cottage safely. We had such a wonderful time!

Snowshoeing

The rest of the weekend we spent a lot of time trying out our new snowshoes over the thoughtfully cleared trails through the cottage property.

Ruby, the dog, appreciated being able to roam free (if “free” means being stuck like glue to our feet the whole time)! In fact, she tried to catch a ride on my snowshoes more than once.

We loved it

After a wonderful long weekend, I highly recommend Dobson’s Dam for a winter getaway, and hope to come sometime in the warm weather so I can try my hand at the lazy river tubing experience!
