We chose the Almost Heaven cottage in Tobermory because we had never been to that area of Ontario before, and were anxious to explore the region. The trip up to the Bruce Peninsula from the Waterloo area was amazing – you don’t need to go through Toronto and the crazy traffic to get there.
The cottage itself is a gem – we were impressed by the quality of the fixtures throughout the cottage and some of the small space storage ideas for this uniquely shaped cottage.
Since our Cocker Spaniel, Ruby, who accompanies us on all of our cottage vacations, was unable to climb the spiral staircase, we stayed in the main floor bedroom, just off the kitchen. I would advise anyone with mobility issues to use that bedroom as well since the stairs do require some care, especially when feet are still damp from the upstairs shower.
The cottage property is nicely landscaped, with lots of plants and flowers, and it felt private since the other cottages were screened from view. Walks along the road are also easy since the terrain is pretty flat with limited traffic.
Almost Heaven is very conveniently located just 5 minutes from Tobermory itself, on Cameron Lake, an inland lake, so the water is warmer than it is on either coast. Unfortunately, our September dates were cooler than we had hoped for, but we made the best of it by turning it into a sightseeing and hiking trip.
The Bruce Trail runs through the area, so hiking choices are amazing! Besides catching the hiking bug (we hiked just about every day), we made sure to take the boat tour to Flowerpot Island, which I definitely recommend. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Hiking on the island itself was amazing – with so many great spots for taking pictures my phone actually died before we caught the boat back to the mainland! Hiking along the Bruce Trail was amazing, and highly recommended. The scenery overlooking Georgian Bay was spectacular!
A visit to The Grotto is also a must-do – it does require a short hike to get there, and parking spots need to be booked in advance, but it’s well worth the effort!
It was a wonderful week, and if we can ever find a free week in the summer at the cottage we just might return one day soon.
