When the snow is dirty in the city, the streets are slushy and no-one is smiling, it’s a sure time to get out to the country.
And the Family Day Weekend is just the time to do it!
On February 17th – 20th, 2017 , plan your snowy getaway and enjoy white again.
Here’s 7 fun things you can do:
Walk on a frozen lake
When the sky is brilliantly clear, the stars are twinkling, and the moon is high, there is little more magical than a walk on a frozen lake. Many lakes will be criss-crossed with snowmobile tracks which makes walking on the snow a little easier. It’s an unforgettable experience.
Go Geocaching
Check out the local geocaches in the area – you can find those that are searchable in winter. Then wrap up warm and head on out into the snow. Highlands East is known as the geocaching capital of Ontario.
Find a local outdoor rink
Pack your skates and head off to an outdoor rink. Many of the smaller resorts have rinks and some townships convert play areas into skating areas for the winter months. Check the municipality websites for information and here’s some rinks you can find in Muskoka.
Have a barbecue
BBQs are not just for summer. When you first experience the waft of burgers and steak from a grill in the middle of winter, the whole family will want to get outside and help. Make some hot chocolate and enjoy!
Take a winter sleigh ride
Bundle up and take a ride on a horse-drawn sleigh in a snowy forest. This is not something you can do in the city so get out to the country and book your trip.
Dig a hole and dangle a rod
Check out the best areas for ice fishing and book a cottage nearby. Rent an ice hut for the day – and yes, they even come with heating!
Rent a snowmobile
No experience necessary as you’ll get a run-down on how to operate the machine when you rent one. It’s great to try out the sport on some OFSC trails. The Haliburton area is a good place to start your sledding obsession!
There are many great winter activities across Cottage Country.
