Overview ↑↓
Ahmic Lake has a long tradition of children and swimming camps. Across the decades, thousands of people have gathered fond memories of summer days spent in the peaceful camp atmosphere of the Almaguin highlands. Maybe you have fond memories of your own days at camp - the mystical call of the loon, canoeing the lake, swimming, kayaking, friends, games, great meals - all topped off with an evening campfire. If you and your family would like to re-kindle some of those memories (or introduce someone to them), we think we have the place for you!
SpikeMoore is THE spot for a large group that wants to experience lake life as it was all those years ago. Even the drive there is steeped in tradition as you pass by Camp Ak-O Mak and drive on the tree-lined cottage road that connects you to your destination. The location is extremely private and safe, yet accessible by private road, surrounded by countless kilometres of running and biking trails, bordered to the south by 20 acres of vacant land for a nice serene and tranquil stay. On arrival, you'll feel like you have stepped back in time. The forest opens up to reveal a large, double cottage that will be your home for the week. Although traditional in spirit, all beds and appliances are brand new, so you won't be roughing it here! Visit the property in this short video. short video.
The smaller of the two is a cozy 4-bedroom cottage (PK’s Cottage) with a kitchenette and 2 full bathrooms. A small living room on the main level is a great little spot for reading and relaxing, but a little exploring of this cabin will reveal a 3-bedroom 2nd level and a spiral staircase that takes you up to a loft principal bedroom on the 3rd level. Up here you'll find a luxurious king bedroom, sitting chairs, two work desks, as well as a walkout to a screened deck with a view of the waterfront. This room has a real "crow's nest" feel to it and you might find some of your group disappear to here for extended periods.
The larger cottage (Moonlight Lodge) is a few steps away and is the place where your group will find itself congregating when not enjoying the great outdoors. The main level boasts a camp kitchen, living room, dining area and a powder room. Up one level of stairs you will find a sleeping level, with 5 bedrooms and a 4-piece bathroom. As long as stairs aren't a problem, you might entitle Grandma and Grandpa to the loft level here - a large bedroom complete with a spacious 4-piece bath and walk-in shower as well as their own deck. We'll leave this decision up to you, however, but in camp tradition may we suggest rock-paper-scissors to see who gets this level.
Oh, and there is also a basement level here complete with a bar, two futons, a smartTV, foosball and pool table and seating area - a spot for evening or rainy-day tournaments.
A stand-alone bunkie housing the Fitness Centre is the perfect getaway for meditation or exercise. The Workout Retreat room is complete with some yoga mats and exercise equipment, including a Peloton stationary bike (note: you’ll need your own Peloton account). There is a wood stove here and a sitting chair, as well as a covered sitting deck with a view of the property.
Okay - the reason you came here is to enjoy the great outdoors that is cottage country, right? Well, this place just oozes waterfront fun. From the main deck, a pathway takes you about 30 yards to the waterfront under the careful embrace of the surrounding trees. Here you will find a wonderful sandy water entry with a small beach, depending on the water levels at the time. There is a long dock leading to a covered boat slip - a perfect spot for launching water fun, be it swimming or via any of the included watercraft.
Nearby, Burks Falls offers groceries and a few shops and restaurants. A little further afield, the towns of Huntsville and Parry Sound offer the services of larger centres. For local flavour, we highly recommend at least one visit to the Cornball Store which features fabulous baked goods. Step outside the norm and visit the Midlothian Castle (aka "Screaming Heads") sculpture park.
