There has always been a mystique about owning or renting your own island - a continent unto itself where you are the monarch. Often, this can involve a complex boat ride through channels and bays which can leave all but the most experienced boater flummoxed. Not so with Joy Island - your exclusive paradise no more than a 100 yards from the shore. Here you have all the advantages of having your own island without the complexities of water taxis or boat rentals. If you need to go back and forth to the mainland, a kayak or canoe will easily fit the bill!
Joy Island is located on Clear Lake, just off Highway 11 between Huntsville and Burks Falls. The owners will ferry you and your supplies to/from the island at the start and end of your trip, and as we said earlier, interim trips are easily made.
Although you are on an island, you are not roughing it here. The cottage is a modern build. Two generously sized bedrooms sleep our group in comfort. An open concept living/kitchen/dining area with large windows leaves you no doubt that you are in Cottage Country and here to relax. There is also a large 3-piece bathroom with a walk-in shower. Stepping outside, you'll discover a marvellous deck with multiple seating areas - giving your sun or shade to suit your mood - as well as the pièce de résistance, a large screened sunroom complete with seating, a fireplace and a table for games and puzzles. One look at this room and we could easily imagine grabbing a coffee, a novel and saying goodbye to civilization for the foreseeable future as we enjoyed the soothing lake breezes and view. Due to its island location, campfires are not permitted here, but there is a fire table and the aforementioned fireplace in the screened room.
If, on the other hand, you feel like a dose of the mainland during your stay, there is plenty to do within easy driving distance. Huntsville is just 20 minutes to the south and has all you'll want in terms of shopping, supplies, dining and taking in the Cottage Country atmosphere. The small town of Burks Falls is just a little closer to the North, and although it does not offer as many amenities as Huntsville, there are certainly the basics, a couple of nice mom-and-pop diners and food trucks, an LCBO and some quaint shops and bakeries. The 14-hole track of Almaguin Highlands Golf Course is just 15 minutes away - perfect when 9 holes isn't enough but you don't have time for 18. Arrowhead Provincial Park is also close by, as well as Algonquin National Park. Bring your camera, the books and games you want to catch up on - leave behind your stress.
