Overview ↑↓
One of the biggest demands we hear for a summer cottage rental is a sandy beach - and to be honest, you might not find ANYTHING better than Big Beach. This Lake Huron cottage rental, located just north of Goderich (According to Queen Elizabeth - The Prettiest Town in Canada) on Ontario's west coast, the cottage is a showplace for the amazing waters of Lake Huron. Swimming, sunning, sunsets and a true beach experience await you here. It might be a day on a blanket welcoming the warmth of the Sun, a frolic with the kids in the lake, an evening stroll than may take you kilometres up or down the beach, or maybe just watching the sun sink below the horizon like a giant fiery ball dropping into the lake - they say if you listen closely you can hear the water sizzle!
Inside, you will be treated again to iconic cottage time. Wood panelling throughout harkens back to the time when these beach cottages were constructed, and the windows take full advantage of the view. The cottage is a classic split level, with the bedrooms and bathroom on the main level and the living room on the upper level. On the lower level, the kitchen has a breakfast area for on-the-run snacks while there is a wonderful dining area for more formal seating with a walkout to the deck. There is also a reading retreat nook tucked in behind the living room - you might want to hide here to finish that whodunit.
The bedrooms sleep 8 quite comfortably, and the youths in the extended family will no doubt be talking long after lights-out in the largest bedroom, sharing tales of the day's adventures. The lead couple in the group will want to lay claim to the water-side bedroom, letting the sound of the waves lull them to dreamland.
Out and about, Goderich is a short drive. It has shopping and all the basics, as well as all the classic cottage country entertainment. While we have always been partial to footlongs and shakes at the Skyranch Drive-in, others may want to take in a play at the Livery Theatre, play a round of golf at The Maitland, try your hand at angling in the River that lends its name to the aforementioned golf course, explore the Tiger Dunlop Trail, take in the weekly farmer's market or soak up some history at the Gaol, the Huron County Museum, the Lighthouse or in the famous Courthouse Square.

Waterfront
There is a big sand beach between the water and the cottage. To the north is a big sand beach. To the south is more sand beach. Pretty well everywhere you look is a sandy beach.
Lake Huron may throw something different your way every day. Some days, as seen in the photos, the lake will be an amazing aquamarine blue. On stormy days, the lake will roll with whitecaps and churn the lake bottom into a silver-grey - great for body surfing and boogie boarding. While the shoreline may vary with seasonal storm activity, the entry is generally pebble and stone - swimming shoes are recommended. Sand bars come and go and may be found just a few yards from shore. The water is clean, clear and weed free.
Trivia
While you would never realize it while driving through this scenic area, Goderich is home to the world's largest salt mine, which extends 2 miles offshore and lies 1600 feet under the lake where the depth is 200 feet. The trucks used under the lake are immense and are constructed from parts within the mine as they are too large to drive in.
