Bayshield Cottage, a Parry Sound cottage rental, takes its name from the two features that stand out when you sit on the deck and look out over Lake Manitouwabing - first the bay, a nice sheltered spot offering great weed free swimming and water fun, and the rugged "Group of Seven" beauty of Canadian Shield rock. Toss in a most traditional 3-bedroom cottage and you have here a classic Ontario cottage vacation for your family.
The cottage sits high enough on the rocks so as to enjoy wonderful views, but not so high as to make getting to the waterfront a challenge (although those with mobility issues may need some assistance). We were able to descend the gentle slope without difficulty.
Inside the cottage, large windows dominate the architecture, with the kitchen, dining and seating areas all taking full advantage. The bedrooms and bathroom are spacious as traditional cottages go, and the pine throughout the cottage leaves you with no doubt that you are enjoying a relaxing week at the lake. The deck is one of the star features here, with glass paneling leaving an unspoiled view of the dock and waterfront. You'll enjoy sun or shade here, and everyone can join the cook while he or she tempts your taste buds with the smell of the BBQ.
A short amble down to the waterfront offers a variety of treats. A large extended dock, complete with gazebo, is the perfect place to launch your flotilla for exploring what Manitouwabing has to offer, and of course is the place where you can idle away the hours with a good book or some tunes, letting the stresses of city life take a well deserved back seat for a while.
Up closer to the cottage, there is a fire pit for traditional evening enjoyment.
Just 20 minutes away, Parry Sound beckons for at least one day trip. Quaint shops, a good selection of restaurants (both downtown and waterfront), boat cruises, museums and more await you here. If you are in the area during the Festival of the Sound, the Stockey Centre is the place to be for music lovers.
Bayshield hits a cottage sweet spot - the right size for a small to medium size family, a great waterfront and a clean, traditional cottage feel. We think there are families who will make this a multi-year tradition. Will your family be one of them?
