1. Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh

In Bala, there sits a quaint cranberry marsh that in the winter turns into an outdoor lover’s paradise. Boasting a 1.2km ice skating trail around 12 acres of cranberries, two hockey surfaces on a frozen cranberry pond and snowshoeing, you’re bound to work up an appetite for some hot mulled wine and cider with a gourmet grilled cheese served in the cafe right on site!

2. Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve

If you’re heading up to Huntsville, a day trip here is a must! Spend some time cross-country skiing any of the none trails at no cost! With over 35km of cross-country ski trails, this is a great spot to come for a day of winter adventure.  If skiing isn’t your thing, be sure to visit the bird sanctuary and/or deer yard here to catch a glimpse and snap some great photos of these animals in their natural habitat.

3. Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve

When you visit Haliburton, at any time of year, but especially in winter, this is a fun family day excursion. Try your hand at some popular winter pastimes, including dog sledding, ice fishing, and even snowmobiling. But that’s not it! Before you head home, don’t forget to check out the wolf center’s observatory and try to spot a member of Haliburton Forest’s wolf pack!

4. Kawartha Nordic

Just 40 minutes North of Peterborough in the heart of the Kawarthas is one of the best places in Ontario to give cross-country skiing a try! With 30 maintained trails, classic cross-country ski, skate ski rentals and lessons available, this is a great place to come and give this classic winter sport a try.

5. Horseshoe Resort Barrie

This Ontario resort in Barrie offers activities year-round, but it’s especially great to visit in winter. Not only offering downhill and cross-country skiing, but Horseshoe Resort also offers snow tubing, fat biking, snowshoeing, mini snowmobiling, ice skating, restaurants, and even a spa! Visit one day only, or stay nearby and plan a week worth of fun activities here and in the area for a winter getaway you’ll never forget!
