About This Cottage

There was a time when a cottage vacation meant minimizing the indoors and maximizing the outdoors. Simolea Hideaway cottage rental follows in this tradition. Combining a cozy 2-bedroom cottage with a huge property (777 feet of shoreline!) for peace and privacy and a classic Parry Sound waterfront, this cottage could be the right choice for a value-conscious family looking for simplicity and splashy fun.

Simolea Lake is located not far from the town of McKellar, just east of Parry Sound. A relatively small lake, it has few cottages on it so this is a place to enjoy quiet. The driveway from the road to the cottage is almost a half kilometre long through a canopy of birches and pines, among others. It opens up into a large grassy space that holds the cottage and two outbuildings, both currently used for storage but in future may be an expansion of the space for additional guests. You can enjoy a game of horseshoes out on the lawn or simply enjoy strolls down the laneway or the quiet cottage road.

The inside of the cottage is cozy and functional. There is a kitchen/dining/living area with a TV/DVD combination for movies in the front half of the cottage, while the back half has a pair of bedrooms and a 3-piece bathroom.

There is a good old-fashioned covered porch at the entry that runs the full length of the cottage. We think it is a wonderful spot to sit with a book and/or a drink and waste a little time, just because you can. Relaxing is what this place is about. A slope takes you to the waterfront. Simolea Lake is quiet and you can explore a little in the watercraft provided.

Swimming is good off the dock. The water is weed free but deepens quite quickly. Entry should only be via the dock as the rocks at water's edge can be quite slippery.

Feel like exploring the area? The town of McKellar, less than 3 km distant, has a general store and a couple of great little places for ice cream or burgers. The Ridge at Manitou, famous for quality golf, is less than 2 km away (we resisted the temptation to say "a short drive"). For everything else you need, including shopping and entertainment, Parry Sound is just 20 minutes away.

The natural forest floor slopes from the cottage to the lakefront. There is a small dock for boat and swimming entry. The water deepens very quickly from shore. We do not recommend entry at places other than the dock as the rocks may be very slippery at water's edge. The water is weed free and good for swimming.

The local township and nearby community of McKellar is named for Archibald McKellar (1816-1894), a member of the legislative assemblies for the Province of Canada (1857-1867) and, following Confederation, Ontario (1867-1875). The neighbouring communities of Broadbent and Hurdville were named for American Steel Millionaire, Samuel Broadbent (1845-1923), who financed the building of the Trans-Canadian Railway and Canadian Financier William Faulkner Hurdville (1838-1910), who also helped finance the Railway.
