About This Cottage

When you're looking for an Ontario cottage rental, it's always nice to find something a bit different. That's why we were excited to see Hidden Trail Cottage. There is nothing quirky or lacking in the cottage itself - on the contrary it features beautiful modern interior finishing and the extras like central air conditioning. What makes this property unique is its location - you won't find the address on a map, but you will most certainly find the cottage. Just off Old Nipissing Road in the old ghost town of Seguin Falls, you'll find a branch of the Seguin Trail that leads you to this cottage. This means two things: One, you have a wonderfully private location (the cottage driveway is about a quarter of a kilometre so you are well off the trail) AND you have the perfect trail at the end of your driveway for hiking, ATV'ing, snowmobiling, cycling (wide tires recommended) - whatever your pleasure!

We did mention that the cottage is not what you'd expect to find (literally) off the beaten path. As you can see from the photos, the interior has been refurbished to give the cottage a wonderful modern appeal and comfort in a back-split type of design. The main level features the kitchen, main bathroom and 2 bedrooms. A short flight of stairs takes you down to a large open-concept living/dining space, and a flight of stairs takes you up top to 2 more bedrooms and another bathroom. Hot summer weather? No problem - air conditioning will keep you cool.

Lower Fry Lake is a smaller lake with just a few cottages. While there are cottages across the lake, you have no visible neighbours on either side. Alongside the driveway is the Seguin River that runs out of Lower Fry Lake, so on that side of the property you are treated to the gentle bubbling of the waterway as it passes over the rocks.

Out and about, you'll love the trail. One of the features we REALLY love about this location is the ability to walk, hike, ATV, ski, snowmobile etc. to the bakery in Orrville, just 10 km away. Note that during wet seasons, parts of the trail may be underwater. Road cyclists will love Highway 518, which winds its way through the area amidst trees and outcroppings of Canadian Shield Rock. We also recommend a visit by car to the bakery if hiking the trail isn't your thing. While there is also a general store in Orrville for basic supplies, further afield, the town of Parry Sound will have all you need in the way of shopping, entertainment and restaurants. Of course, in a town that was called Seguin Falls, you might expect to find a waterfall close by. Indeed you can, accessible with a bit of exploring, just off Old Nipissing Road. Bring your camera because the photo opportunities never stop here.

Please note - for winter rentals (and in the Spring during wet/muddy season), 4-wheel drive vehicles (or snowmobiles) are required to reach the cottage via the trail.

Waterfront

Lower Fry Lake is a smaller lake which means you won’t hear boat engines zooming around (motor boats are allowed). There is a boat launch on the opposite side of the lake and there is a deeded parking spot as well. The lake is suitable for swimming and is about 7 feet deep from the dock. Deepest part of the lake is 35 feet in the middle of the lake. The entrance into the lake from the cottage is from smooth granite rock or from the dock. The lake is great for fishing and canoeing. The lake does run into the Seguin River which is shallow and rocky and thus not suitable for canoeing or boating. The rustling River is very relaxing when you sit by the fire pit. The river is not really suitable for swimming due to rocks and constant current.

Trivia

Up until 1933, the town of Seguin Falls was a bustling railroad port, boasting a post office, school, general store, a church and the famous King George Hotel. Most are now gone, except for the school house, and the railroad line has been converted to a recerational trail (The Seguin Trail) for hikers, ATVr's and snowmobile enthusiasts.
