About This Cottage
Ontario's South Coast - warm sunny skies, panoramic vistas and the blue green waters of Lake Erie - that's the order of the day here at Cedar Gem. Spend your days reading on the lakefront deck, lounging in the yard, enjoying the hot tub or walking or cycling along the cottage roads. An easily accessible beach area just a few steps away lets you cool off in the water. At the end of the day you'll be comfortable anywhere to choose to be inside this cottage, named for the cedar construction evident throughout.
Upstairs you'll find the main section of the cottage, and smaller families will likely spend their entire time here. An open concept kitchen/living/dining area, emphasizing views of the lake and taking advantage of skylights and large windows for natural light, always reminds you that you are on vacation. There is a large screen TV here for you to catch the big game or enjoy a movie in the evening or on a rainy day. Stepping just beyond the walkout doors, you'll find yourself in the wonderful sunroom - a perfect place to catch a breeze, do a puzzle, enjoy a board game or simply soak in the atmosphere. Right next to that, you'll find another facet of the gem - the hot tub! Tucked neatly into a glass/screened-in room adjacent to the sunroom, this is a great spot to relax those aching muscles after a day of swimming or hiking - and since it's indoor, it's good to go, rain or shine.
Next to the sunroom on the other side is the master bedroom, so if you are the one booking the cottage for your group, claim dibs on this one...it let's you pop out for a midnight refreshment or early morning coffee on the deck. Bring binoculars or your telescope. The summer stars shine brightly here and you'll find the Milky Way makes a great photo target.
The downstairs area of the cottage is great for someone wanting their own space. A self-contained cottage in its own right, it has a living area complete with big-screen TV, a kitchenette with a dining table, 4-piece bathroom and a generous sized queen bedroom.
Of course, you came here for the sun, so step outside the sunroom's walkout doors and soak in the sun and the view from the deck. You can enjoy things from the sunroom deck, but that final step in "getting away from it all" will be to mosey down the gently sloped lawn to the waterfront deck. here the rest of the world melts away and it would be easy to imagine oneself being on the bow of one of the large ships you may occasionally see passing far out in the lake.
We recommend a walk or bike ride along the coast road into the little hamlet of Peacock Point for that most traditional of cottage activities, the ice cream treat or snack at the local general store. A 20-minute drive takes you into the well known summer hub of Port Dover. While most famous for it's Friday the 13th gatherings of motorcycle enthusiasts, the beaches, historical lighthouse, restaurants and quaint shops are worth at least a day spent here. If you are coming from a long distance, Niagara Falls is just a little over an hour away, complete with wine country, all things touristy – and of course the famous falls.
Cedar Gem is perfect for a small extended family or a medium sized single family looking for something special close to so much of what Southern Ontario has to offer.
