About This Cottage

If seclusion, acres of woodland, perfectly private waterfront and luxury accommodation are on your wish list, this gorgeous Kawartha cottage is the one for you. A one-of-a-kind property, it will suit anyone wanting a very special vacation location and who doesn’t mind having a lot of space to themselves.

On a quiet bend in the Head River and deep in a woodland setting, The River House enjoys unparalleled privacy. Winding trails lead through the forest to tranquil riverside seating areas and your own secluded swimming hole. With 1300ft of waterfront you can choose to sit awhile and watch the water sparkling in the sunlight; fish from the bank, wade in from the shallow entry area or dive off a rock and swim in the clear water. In the evening, enjoy some time around the campfire or socialise in the screened room with friends and family while you savour this wonderful location.

The owner has renovated the cottage recently and his skills as cabinet maker are evident in every room, from the beautiful dining table with seating for 10 to the maple, cherry and oak used in trim, dressers and cabinets. Each of the bedrooms is unique with hand-made beds and pillow top mattresses and some have wall-mounted fireplaces and sitting areas. The ground floor master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and one of the upper floor bedrooms has its own screened sunroom.

The spacious kitchen has a tiled floor and granite countertops with new appliances and plenty of food preparation space and is separated from the dining area by a large breakfast bar. An attractive sun room is set off the dining room for taking morning coffee and watching the occasional deer.

The large living space is separated into two areas; one with low seating around a table in front of a stone fireplace which is great for games playing or reading; the other has comfortable sofas and chairs and is more focused on the large flat screen TV. Another fully furnished screened sunroom opens from the living room offering even more space for spreading out and enjoying the outside from inside.

All five bedrooms are beautifully decorated and have king size beds in all but one. Two large bedrooms are on the main level – the master has an ensuite bathroom and fireplace and a second bedroom off the hallway has its own sitting area and fireplace. A beautiful pine staircase leads to the upper level where there are three more bedrooms; two with fireplaces and private sitting areas and one with hand-made log twin beds. There are full bathrooms on each level.

At just 25 minutes from Orillia and Casino Rama and nearby golf courses, there are enough activities to keep everyone busy if they can pull themselves away from the tranquillity of the waterfront and cottage. For big water boating, Lake Simcoe is close by and boats can be rented from the marina in Atherley. In short, this is a fabulous base for exploring this area, or just staying put and relaxing – the choice is yours.

Trivia

Monck Road (County Road 45 just north of The River House), is one of the oldest provincial roads north of Toronto. It has a rich history. From Lake Couchiching Road it extends 150 Kms east to Hastings Road at Bancroft. Monck Road’s original purpose was twofold; firstly, that of opening up a wilderness area to settlement; secondly, it was intended to serve as an alternate military route from the upper Great Lakes to the Ottawa Valley. At that time the only other route was via the St Lawrence River, which was vulnerable to American attack. (Source - Bancroft, Ontario, website)
