About This Cottage

It was a perfect sunny day driving through the wonderful little town of Minden Village. The quaint downtown area was alive with summer visitors, the ice cream stand doing a brisk business and the local kids were ignoring the sign that said "No jumping from bridge into the river". That in itself is enough to get one's cottage country relaxation mode started. In that frame of mind, we drove another couple of kilometers and happily arrived at Birches on the Water.

The cottage is conveniently located off County Road 21. On the driveway side of the cottage you will notice some traffic noise, but that recedes comfortably when you enter the cottage itself or head around to the business end of this property, the waterfront.

Let's step inside the cottage first. Entry brings you to the kitchen and dining areas. The kitchen is bright and spacious, complete with that holy grail of cottage rentals, the dishwasher. In addition to the dining table for somewhat formal meals, there are a couple of counter seats for those intent on an early breakfast or late-night snack. The living room is just off the kitchen. It's a great place for group gatherings and movie nights. The large smart TV is not satellite, but with unlimited Internet, the world of online streaming is at your disposal. This level also features a 4-piece main bathroom and 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed, the other with twin bunks. Downstairs is another family gathering area, this one complete with a great view of the yard and waterfront. You'll find some games and puzzles here to while away the hours when you're not enjoying the outdoors, and there are two additional bedrooms on this level as well, and a second 3-piece bathroom.

But of course, the outdoors is the motive for a cottage rental, so let's walk outside and see what awaits. The grill chef in your family will adore the dual option propane or charcoal BBQ on the patio, and the rest of your group can cheer them on from the shady confines of the adjacent gazebo. You'll notice in the photos that there is a small chain link fence which provides some security for guests who want to ensure their children or canine companions do not wander down to the waterfront. While not completely fool-proof (kids and dogs are pretty smart cookies!) it will give you an added sense of control and the ability for 2-legged and 4-legged little ones to wander a bit more freely.

Open the gate on the fence, and a gentle set of steps lets you traverse the slope to the waterfront. You may wish to dally at the small seating area under the trees, or make a beeline to the dock, where swimming and boating await. Did one of you detour to the waterside hammock instead to enjoy the gentle shade of the birches? That's OK, we won't tell. There is a shallow entry area at the waterfront and the water deepens as you move to the end of the dock, from where you may enjoy deeper water swimming.

We've mentioned the village of Minden, where cottage country will surround you at every turn. Browse the shops, enjoy a meal in a restaurant or on a patio. Stroll along the Riverwalk. Indulge in a treat at Minden Cone or Kawartha Dairy - and of course Minden is the place you can pick up your essentials during your stay. Road cyclists may enjoy the hilly terrain and golfers will want to play a challenging round at Blairhampton, less than 10 km distant. This cottage is in an area that will hold you in a cottage frame of mind from the moment you arrive and we hope for days after you depart.

Trivia

Minden is named after a town in the North Rhine–Westphalia federal state in Germany. It was first surveyed in 1858. Before that, the settlement was called Gull River. Settlers were first drawn to the region (via the Bobcaygeon Road, an original colonization road), because of its timber resources. The town lies on the banks of the Gull River and during the 19th and 20th centuries, loggers used the river to move timber to sawmills downstream.
