Arykat Otter Lake
About This Cottage
A cottage in the round. That's what I thought of as I arrived at this unique property just off the road leading to popular Otter Lake an hour west of Ottawa.
This is a nature lover's paradise and comes with a variety of watercraft for exploring the creek on the property and Otter Lake beyond. The patio area overlooks natural wetlands that abounds with butterflies, wild flowers and native shrubs, and a marked trail leads to the waterfront. Once there it's a choice of a canoe, kayak or stand up paddleboard to follow the winding creek into the lake.
Inside, the round pine ceiling is the focal point and draws the eye from every room. There are two queen bedrooms; one is off the kitchen, and other off the living area. The bathroom is in the centre and has a unique bathtub and skylight at the centre of the roof. The "non-round" area of the property is a storeage area and is not part of the rental area.
The kitchen with granite-topped breakfast bar is ideal for breakfast for two, or to sit and share an aperitif while the cook-of-the-day is busy creating a masterpiece. Eat in, or out on the patio overlooking the countryside.
The cottage sits above a narrow creek that leads into Otter Lake. Although this isn’t suitable for swimming, a short paddle into the lake brings you to clear and deep water for exploring and stopping for a dip.
Arykat is ideal for a small family, or a couple or two wanting to enjoy a nature-filled few days. There is a lot to see and do in the area with the delightful small towns of Perth and Smiths Falls just 15-minutes away, and our nation's capital, an easy hour drive. This makes it a super base in the country for a city trip.

Trivia
Despite it's relative small size Otter Lake holds a large volume of water and is quite deep, up to 100 ft at it's deepest location. This means that the lake is one of the last lakes in the Rideau Lakes region to freeze in winter. As a result, in late November and often most of December the lake is home to a large variety of water fowl. Loons, Goldeneyes, Mergansers and even the occasional Trumpeter Swan will use the lake as a stopover point during their migration South for the winter.
