Overview ↑↓
The French River, located in Ontario's "near north" cottage country, is well known to those looking to enjoy some of the best cottaging in the province at a value price. Loved by fishermen, boaters and afficionados of scenic beauty, the river stretches more than a hundred km from Lake Nipissing to Georgian Bay and is resplendent in its gorges, waterfalls, rapids and lakes. Just outside the town of Alban is where you will find River's Rest, a delightful cottage that is the perfect spot from which to take in all this and more.
River's Rest is a 3-bedroom cottage that sleeps 6 and is built for family fun. The upper/main level features the kitchen and dining areas along with 2 bedrooms, bathroom and living room, with a 3-season room that you will love. Winter guests will appreciate the warming/drying shelf for gloves and hats in the main entryway. Downstairs you'll find another bedroom and a niche with single bed and futon. Competition runs high on this level, with both air hockey and foosball taking center stage here. A wall-mounted TV lets the family enjoy a movie or the big game while waiting their turn. In the back hallway there is a laundry area as well as a 3-piece bathroom.
Outside, a generous sized yard serves as your gateway to watery fun throughout the week. It's large enough for some family frisbee and for the younger crowd, there is a playset with swings. The river stretches out in front of you - begging your choice - will it be boating? Fishing? Maybe just chilling on the dock.
Maybe you're into snowmobiling or ice fishing. We've got you covered. At the time we visited this cottage, both activities were in full swing. The river stays frozen for a long time each winter, and seeing it by snowmobile is a great way to go. Of course, ALWAYS check local weather and ice conditions to make sure any activity is safe at the time of your stay.
The French River area has plenty to see and do. Please bring your camera. French River Provincial Park, just minutes away, offers some of the best views from the William E. Small Bridge. The town of Alban is just 5 minutes away and has the basics, including an LCBO if you fancy some white wine with the day's catch that you are grilling. Dee Dee's Diner offers up home-style meals all day long and @827 serves up delicious local fish and chips along with authentic poutine. Noelville is just 10 minutes east and offers a little bit more in terms of groceries etc. (and hey, since we're in that vein, The Voyageur Chip Stand ain't all that bad either). How about a small road trip? Sudbury is just 45 minutes up highway 69 - this might be your only chance to see Science North or get a selfie in front of the Big Nickel.
River's Rest is just 3 hours north of the GTA, without Muskoka prices. It's a great choice any time of year. Come up and say "bonjour"!
