Imagine a location where you can bring your family together – where the cottage cooks can congregate in the kitchen; the movie buffs get space to watch their favourites; the readers have a quiet space with the best view in the area, and the gamesters can choose between pool, darts, poker or foosball, and the fishermen get to sit at the bar and trade tales of the largest catch.
And then, everyone gets together at one long table to enjoy a meal. It doesn’t get much better than this.
Red Cedar Lodge is a sprawling, comfortable place to kick back and enjoy time with friends and family. There are multiple rooms to explore, decks overlooking the lake, a large courtyard for outdoor dining and the expanse of Dalrymple Lake across the quiet road.
On the main floor, the large entrance hall opens into a hallway with the kitchen and informal eating area at one end, and the equally spacious living and dining room to the other with doors onto the deck. We loved the table that easily seats 12 people and can imagine celebration meals and convivial gatherings going long into the evening.
Up the stairs, you’ll find a mezzanine floor with seating; four large bedrooms and a family bathroom, together with the master bedroom and ensuite. Above one of the bedrooms is a loft with a pullout couch, and the most stunning lake view.
The crowning glory of the cottage is the entertainment room. Clad in the red cedar of the name, it’s warm and inviting and full of great activities from pool and darts to a poker table, card table and Foosball. Of course, there is a TV with comfortable leather seating, and a bar to sit and enjoy your post-game beer. A door opens off the games room to another wrap-around deck.
The courtyard between the main cottage and the games room makes a perfect space for the BBQ and outdoor dining, with grassed areas for ball games. The road between the cottage and lake is quiet although you will see cars passing by.
The dock stretches out into the lake with a ramp to one side allowing easy access to the shallow hard sand lake bed – the water is just a few inches deep, and gets gradually deeper as you walk out into clear water for swimming.
Take an evening stroll along the road to the nearby resort where there is a small store and Kawartha Dairy ice cream outlet. Boat rentals are also available at the resort.
The cottage is well situated to enjoy the local area. Orillia, the consummate cottage town which many believe inspired Leacock’s "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town", lies just 20 minutes away and features all the usual city amenities along with a great selection of restaurants, museums and other attractions. Washago is also just 20 minutes away and makes a nice destination for a meal in a less crowded environment.
