What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is basically hi-tech treasure hunting for the modern age using a hand-help global positioning system (GPS) to track down hidden objects.It's great fun for young and old alike and its popularity is growing in leaps and bounds right across the globe.
The basics are simple; someone somewhere takes a weatherproof container, adds a logbook and pen or pencil together with a small inexpensive object – this can be absolutely anything such as a key ring, fridge magnet, small toy car etc. The container and its contents are the 'cache'. The owner finds a suitable (and at times challenging) place to hide the cache and publishes the coordinates of the hiding place on the internet, together with hints on finding it and directions to nearest parking.
The object of the exercise is for other individuals to try to find the cache using their own GPS, to log details of their visit in the logbook and exchange the inexpensive object with one of their own. Believe it or not there are thousands of caches throughout Ontario; for example there are over 450 within a 20 Km radius of our own offices.
