The south-facing shore of Lake Erie is the setting for Windy Willow, a welcoming cottage close to the historic town of Amherstburg near the southwestern tip of Ontario.
Sun and surf are the order of the day at Windy Willow. A few steps away from the cottage, a seawall drops down a few feet to reveal a pebble and sand beach area with a shallow walk out and great swimming. If Mom and Dad don't want to join the watery fun, they can watch from the deck at water's edge. The grass area beside the beach is well suited to a game of catch or badminton. Many of the rooms in the cottage, including two of the bedrooms, take advantage of the geography for expansive lake views. Lake breezes will whisper you to sleep as they blow through the trees that give this cottage its name.
The cottage is well-suited for families of pretty well any size, and will be of particular interest to multi-generational groups looking to re-unite in a relaxing setting. With four+ bedrooms, the cottage will sleep up to 10 people in comfort. A fully-equipped kitchen with dinette area is a great place for a breakfast overlooking the lake, while anticipating a day of fun ahead. There is a living room with satellite television/DVD for evenings or rainy days (don't worry, we won't tell if you want to catch up on a movie on a sunny day too) and a smaller den area with fireplace allows for gatherings of different groups under the same roof.
A deck at the side of the cottage allows you some shade if you wish and of course is the place where the grillmaster will want to show of his or her barbecuing skills. The front yard is fenced, so if your group includes toddlers, it will help keep them in check as the focus tends to be on the water side of the cottage.
Amherstburg is rich in history - A fort settled by British loyalists after the Revolutionary War, it also became a stop on the underground railway prior to the Civil War. Today it is a haven for history buffs and boaters, and you can see all manner of craft navigating the waters of the Detroit River.
If you want to venture a little further afield, the area is rich in possibilities. The town of Windsor and the city of Detroit are just a half hour away and offer just about everything you could want - shopping, big name entertainment and world class sporting events. A drive of roughly the same time in the other direction takes one to Point Pelee National Park, a haven for naturalists, bird watchers, cyclists, canoeists and anyone who just wants to explore. Wine lovers will find a number of vineyards in the area to tempt their palates. At least once in your life you should take the ferry from Leamington to Pelee Island, Canada's southernmost point.
Windy Willow will be a popular spot for families from southern Ontario and Michigan/Ohio and is a great choice for Torontonians looking for a new cottaging experience.
